Types of People in Performance Appraisal Meetings

Types of  People In Yearly One o Ones

Late “out-times”, early “in-times”, delayed and short meal times, lack of sleep, working on weekends, ignoring our personal life and other countless things we do for that one conversation to go great that is actually going to define our future “job title” and the figures that are going to get credited in our salary account at the end of every month for at least an year.

So when the judgment day arrives different people has different expressions on their faces, some are nervous , some are anticipated and some just doesn’t care and are still bragging at the broken vending machine. So, the sequence of meetings start and everyone gets called out one by one, now the duration of meeting actually depends on the type of person who walked in there.

I always feel like these one o ones are like cricket matches where the employees are the batsman and the manager is the bowler and here’s the interesting part , the format of the match totally depends on the batsman. Personally I like T20 matches that are interesting and worth watching, here as well T20 matches are the meetings that are short and crisp and normally the players involved are either good hitters or flat pitchers. So, basically it involves the “Agreed/hopeless” category aka the set of population who are either too satisfied by the rating and the results or too hopeless by the rating system of the organization either way they are not bothered.

Second category is the “One day Matches” and the players of these kind of matches are the batsman with good average. So, it constitutes the population who are neither confident nor hopeless they are like little “fighting Ninjas” who fight at their own level but not sure if they’ll win the war. So, they take considerable time in their one o ones trying to counter every “BUT” the manager bowl to them but not sure will be able to convince him and win the conversation. Most of the times the decisions of these matches are in favor of ruling party only but the ninja is only happy to put a decent fight.

Final category is the “Test Matches” and it constitutes the perfect defenders like “Dravid” and “Laxman”. These people are the ones who have done their proper homework done for every “BUT” manager is going to ask. They duck every bouncer, defend every Yorker and take their proper time playing their innings. So, their one o ones mostly stretch for hours and might even take few days and like test matches most of them end on “Draw” note and the players are not quite happy about it.
Finally when postman delivers the “letters  of fate” some people leave the gate with a brightening smile on their face and thinking about the next expensive thing they can afford now, some are either feeling like being cheated and planning to avenge and some have the satisfaction on their face of being able to make the necessary!

We all know we are working for that little increment but is it worth it? Ask yourself, my take is you’ll definitely find something you are taking away with be it technical skills, domain knowledge or the least will be the professional experience that makes you stand tall in the industry!
