Work from Home : Pros and Cons

Whenever we discuss any job opportunity then apart from money and other things we also discuss the services provided by the company. Apart from Transport, meals and other allowances one other benefit that tops the list use to be work from home.

But after current crisis work from home won’t remain as an allowance but will definitely become a quintessential  part of operating model of any company or business. But like every benefit this too shall have its pros and cons. Lets see some pros and then we can discuss the cons

Pros

Easier Personal Life Management

Lets face it its “Work from Home” sounds like magical words you can manage a lot of things while working from home your laundry, minor household chores, a lot can be done without exhausting your valuable annual leave count or lieing about being sick.

Give more time to your kids or your family members

WFH brings an opportunity of you being home one more day in a week and that’s actually gives you a chance to be a little better Mom or Dad or a son, or a better spouse.

Minimal sick leaves

From employer’s benefit perspective it gives an employee n (mostly one in a week) extra day to be at home and manage his personal mess. So there will be a less probability of him lieing about being sick and ask for that free time. So it’s a win-win for both!

Cons

No time to go offline

With your laptop being online from the time you wake up till you sleep, its quite tempting to just take a quick sneak peek to your mailbox for the reply you are awaiting. If there is a reply you are hooked to your work for another hour or so and will quickly loose the track of time.

Concentration

With kids playing in the house, parents negotiating, house helps asking for instructions sometimes it becomes very difficult to concentrate in your work, or taking your important call. So, you try to find a hide out with the least noise; it can be a hot attic, your kitchen or the balcony.

Disturbances

In one of such experience that I can recall we were 10 people on a project management call and all of the sudden we could hear a child crying . Before we could understand the solution architect himself said that his 8 months old is crawling in his lap and everybody laughed it out. That was one of it, in regular calls we could hear fruit vendors screaming, pets making noises, traffic and we understand.

Double Trouble: Work from home is actually not work

Since you are at home no one (especially the elders and kids) think that you are actually working, so the demands are actually as if it’s a holiday. Hence, you are now working for office as well doing your chores so it’s a double trouble

Loose the connect

This one is when we are having WFH for longer than usual time like these days. With not having your colleagues around you can easily loose the sense of office environment with seniors, juniors, colleagues and boss being around. You start missing those meetings, the breaks, the walks and all of the things that you use to hate.
your mind can play games and can act homely in professional environment
