Jupiter’s Legacy : The complexities behind being a Superhero

Jupiter’s Legacy: A Superhero family drama

When a storyline tries to touch so many points then either you have to wait for another season for the story to completely pan out like Game of Thrones or else it leads to a very unsatisfied ending and that’s what been happening to most of the stories these days. They give you a promising start but fail to keep up till the end. I hope Jupiter's Legacy Season 2 justifies the time spent in Season 1.

Overall Review: 3/5

The Plot

The plot revolved around the male protagonist Sheldon aka Superhero Utopian whose whole family including his wife, brother, and children have superpowers. There are other superheroes as well and together they form a Union of Justice. Justifying its title the story showcases the struggles of passing the Legacy from one generation to another where there is a fight on the basic age-old principles.

There are other facets to the story including the back story of how the mortals got the special powers (yes they were no alien or Iron Man), a disappointed daughter who despises her father, and finally a nemesis who happened to be an ally from the past.

Review

The story had depth with all of the main characters being given enough focus so that you know them, their intentions and you actually start accepting and believing them.

It’s the foundational part of the story that didn’t deliver as per expectations for me and my expectations from a superhero movie are simple :

  • Variety of Superheroes with different powers
  • A supervillain strong enough to get this variety of superheroes united
  • A super-fight between superheroes and supervillain
It may sound like a DC or Avenger plot but my expectation from Superheroes is very simple, super army Vs Super Villian and an amazing climax!

What didn’t work

Story Line

The Story Line was primarily based upon the struggles of passing the legacy from one generation of Super Heroes to another. But isn't that normal or a bit cliched? Business elites facing new age struggles while trying to pass on the legacy from one generation to another. Yes , when there are superpowers there will be a little more fireworks but dedicating a whole season to it was way too much and was also irritating after a certain point.

Too Close but yet too far! There were Superheroes but they never put into action

There is not one but a bunch of Superheroes and that too in different generations and yet there was not a clear storyline where Superheroes unite and fight against the bad guys and you get to see a good old fashioned Superheroes fight sequence.

The Back Story of Origination: Given too much screen space and time

Most part of the story includes  going back in the timeline where the protagonist Sheldon chases a vision and get onto a voyage with other bunch of people and how they get blessed with Superpowers which was again an important piece of puzzle to put in but one more time have given too much screen space.

Multiple Tangents in the Storyline

There were multiple tangents that the story touches, a superhero Dad trying to teach his son to carry his legacy, a daughter with superpowers who despises her Dad for not being there in her growing years and for being more an idol than being a father and she chooses not to use them and instead be a drug addict just to get away from her reality.

There is Super Union like Justice League that analyzes the threats to the world and eliminate them, young aspirants having superpowers trying hard to make their place in the Justice Union, a nemesis who earlier use to one of them and on top of that the generation gap issues.

And you wait all of these to come to a conclusion but they never did!

So, you see there were too many threads that were supposed to weave into a beautiful cape but all we got were loose ends!

Superman/ Supergirl reference

There were so many points that reminded me of DC supergirl references like “We don’t kill” or the friend turned villain like Lex and Superman.

Climax

Won’t reiterate but the climax felt totally flat, there was nothing! All of the time you keep wondering that now the story will converge but it just Didn’t! Perhaps they are saving it for future seasons..
