Supergirl Season 6 Episode 6: Nia got her special power and the world got Cat Grant!
This episode had a lot of substance to it where Nia got a special
power, CJ became Cat Grant, a lot of references to the old episodes that
connected the past and present together. Also, Brainy and Nia fixed the timeline,
got what they needed, and came back to the original timeline.
Synopsis: The last episode ended with Brainy and Nia walking
into a trap set up by Naxim Tork.
This episode took off from that point where Brainy and Nia
actually falling prey to that trap and Kara saving them at the right time.
Scene changes where Alex driving Kara to her prom where
Kenny is waiting for her then the event happened for which the h the whole time
travel happened “The meteor shower”. As bound to happen Kara punches the meteor
and hurt herself through Kryptonite in the meteor. But before Brainy and Nia
could have collected the debris with Kara’s blood the Naxim Tork sabotaged and
demanded the Kryptonian (as in Kara). But Kenny being in love with Kara
sacrificed and got himself abducted instead.
In an attempt to save Kenny, Brainy and Nia got themselves
captured, and guess whom they ran into… it's young Cat Grant being called as CJ
at that time. CJ was investigating the unusual “magical” things happening in
Midvale and earlier that day have also recorded the Naxim Tork’s ship . As soon
as Nia saw CJ she recognized her and conveyed
the same to Brainy. Well, Kara came and saved the day but in all this revealed
herself. So evidently the timeline has been changed!
Here the title of the episode served its purpose when
Brainy, Nia, and young Kara (who snuck in and tagged along) went back in time to
fix the timeline. So, in the last part of the episode, a lot of fixes happened
that got messed up in the last 1 and a half episode. First, Nia talked Cat Grant
out of investigating this story, Brainy put the Naxim Tork ship to a course
where eventually DEO will find them and most importantly Kara punching the
meteor, getting hurt as it due to happen. So, they collected the debris and
came back to the present time.
Highlights
In this episode, Nia discovered her new power of “Lucid
Dreams” where she can actually get the entities out of her dream into actual
reality. This time she pulled out a pink cougar from her dream and unleashed it on the abductors
that has its own significance and plays an important role in building the
reality as it is today.
Review
The episode was very “Craftily” written, there were so many
references to the previous episodes that tie the past and present together.
The origination of Cat Grant
When Nia met CJ (the young Cat Grant) to convince her not to
investigate Midvale she accidentally blurted out and referred her as “Cat Grant”
and from there CJ became Cat Grant. She also gave her the pep talk about
thinking big and look for more than just being the gossip writer for Perry
White in Daily Planet which was again a past episode reference.
Cage named PW
Initially, when Nia started seeing this dream, there was a
pink cougar in a cage and there was something written on that cage that she couldn’t
read at that time. On carefully reading in her last dream there were initials PW written on it which she couldn’t
connect to at that moment. But when CJ (the young Cat Grant) referred her boss’s
name at daily planet “Perry White” she immediately connected the dots and the
significance of initials PW (Perry White).
Though nothing was said out loud but what we could
understand from that cage with initials PW and holding a ping Cougar which is a
form of Cat, the writer has conveyed “The incredible and immensely talented Cat
Grant who is going to be the future Queen of all Media being caged by small and the tiny vision of Perry White”. When Nia convinced CJ not to investigate Midvale
even though that for her own mission but she also motivated CJ to be “The Cat
Grant” which the future knows. So, in a way, Nia actually released the Cougar or
Cat out of the cage!
The Pink Cougar
This pink Cougar that Nia actually pulled out from her dream could be seen in the Catco reception area in all the season 1 episodes.
This
was also drawn by Cat in her drawing with the name CatCo along with it.
The actors
We have all seen episodes with young Kara and Alex and they always do a phenomenal job and the same has been appreciated by Chyler Leigh
aka the now Alex Danvers who also directed this episode on social media as
well.
Special mention needs to be done for the actress who played the
young Cat Grant. We all know Calista Flockhart being a legend in playing the
older Cat Grant which is my most favorite character played by an even better
actress. The character has been special for all of its mannerisms, body
language, and all the little nuances that Calista has put into it. The younger
Cat Grant actually looked and sounded so much like the older Cat Grant, the
same old attitude and way of saying things, all of that reflected perfectly on
screen.
Brainy and Nia
The whole Midvale and the time jump section, that was 2
complete episodes were specifically written for Brainy and Nia, specifically
Nia. Where Nia got another special power and also helped CJ becoming Cat Grant
which is a major dedication to the whole foundational storyline of Supergirl.
Away from all the main characters of the show, these two characters got the
needed attention, and writers have done a splendid job in justifying this given
space to them. Personally, I have been an avid follower of Supergirl, or should
I say Mellisa Benoist as Supergirl so even when there was a storyline of
Dreamer/Nia going on, with being Supergirl/Kar around I didn’t quite notice that.
But this episode not only pulled my attention but also has shown how much that
character can contribute to the show, all thanks to the writer!
