Examples of Bad Managerial Behaviour

Examples of bad managerial behavior:  There is nothing like a bad manager it’s the bad decisions, bad choices that he takes which not only changes the shape of the team but also changes the perception of people towards him as a manager.

Some of the common examples that I found in day to day life for bad managerial behavior are:

Not leading by example: One of the basic thing that we look up to in a leader is “practice what they preach”. So when they ask other teammates to be on time they cannot walk in late by hours as this just loses the gravity of the situation. Other various examples would be you expect others to be more planned then you just can’t throw surprises like ‘will be on leave today’ or not being in the office at all.

Keeping up with their words: When I get promised to get considered for the next promotion within closed walls, I trust that. Since I just get words and nothing on paper is written it’s a risk that I am taking and if I am changing the course of my career based upon mere words, it better be meaningful. After giving up on a golden opportunity just on the basis of that promotion if I get an answer such as “ we couldn’t consider you this time” is not only a bad managerial example but also a betrayal.

Not taking a stand for his team: Whether in front of onshore people, between people of different teams, in an argument, in approval, you always look up to your manager in hope of support. Sometimes a manager lets his team member down for just keeping his word and worth in front of the stakeholders or the higher authorities and that for me is a very bad managerial example.

Divide and Rule: It’s a classic corporate tactic of creating a rift between people and then rule over them though this is a very classic and proven tactic it feels really filthy. When your manager shares two different versions of the same story with you and your friend and tries to create distance between you for me that appears to be a very bad managerial example.

Creating a mini-me: In a bigger organization, there is a very basic rule that all of your requests, complaints, or anything else to your manager need to go through a mini manager sort of person kinda right hand of the boss. To me, that is a terrible managerial example as this not only creates a difference between you and your manager but that also lets other misunderstandings come in that can be solved by a simple talk.

Lack of being appreciative toward people: Being a manager doesn’t mean just shout and pin point on their shortcomings but it also means to appreciate their achievements no matter how small the achievement is. In hard times that small word of appreciation can serve as a great help.

Least interested in people’s interest: As I previously mentioned as well not everyone can have their interest aligned to the team interest but just forcing them to bethink in team interest is bad managerial behavior in my opinion. Because there are a lot of shortcomings out of that as first of all you cannot change anyone’s niche and secondly force or blocking their way doesn’t do any good.

But as I said corporate has its own term of good and bad which change its definition as you change your side. So it was from an employee’s perspective obviously, the manager’s end has its own explanation.
